Echoes in Time
This collection draws inspiration from the 900-year-old history of Porto, a city where time leaves its mark on every wall. The works echo the layered textures of aged stucco, peeling paint, and graffiti, capturing the beauty of surfaces shaped by the passage of time.
Each piece is a dialogue between creation and erosion—gestural marks and abstract forms mimic the process of layering and weathering seen in Porto’s architecture. Working with acrylic on archival watercolor paper, the artist strips away layers of paint, allowing remnants of color and texture to emerge, much like the city’s walls revealing their histories beneath.
The palette reflects Porto’s essence: earthy ochres, muted grays, golden tones, and bold contrasts. These colors evoke the warmth of the sunlit façades, the shadows of forgotten corners, and the vibrant marks left behind by generations. Some pieces are energetic and bold, a nod to human marks and reminiscent of graffiti’s defiant presence, while others evoke quiet decay and subtle shifts, celebrating imperfection and resilience.
Through this collection, the artist invites viewers to witness the stories embedded in these surfaces—a reflection of time, transformation, and the beauty that lies in layers both physical and metaphorical. Just as Porto’s walls carry the weight of centuries, these works honor the city’s enduring spirit and its emergent beauty at nearly every turn.
Artist Statement
This collection reflects my own journey. At 67, I moved to Porto alone, peeling away the layers of a full and complex life to begin again. The process of aging has deepened my perspective, making me more attuned to the quiet resilience and beauty that emerge with time. In this city — where aged granite stone is softened by lichen, where peeling paint reveals hidden beauty, and where ruins are lovingly brought back to life — I found inspiration. Porto, like life itself, reminds us that stunning beauty often lies in the simplest, most humble moments.
These works are a meditation on aging, transformation, time, and the enduring power of renewal. This collection mirrors these processes, celebrating the beauty of imperfection and inviting you to welcome it within yourself.
